Dr. Emory Spradlin, DMD, was in studio Thursday morning to talk to WPKY about the food drive her office does to benefit the Feeding God’s Children Backpack Program.

Dr. Spradlin said that this was the third year her office has participated and that the drive has gotten larger each year. Community members are being encouraged to drop off easy to prepare meals that children can prepare themselves to be used for the Backpack Program. Feeding God’s Children Backpack Program is a national program that provides children with a backpack full of easy to prepare meals for the weekend so they’ll have food to eat until they return to school on Monday. Joni Phelps with the UK Extension Office, as well as several other community leaders, do these various food drives to add supplemental food to the backpacks for extended weekends and holiday breaks to add on top of the food already provided by the national program.

Last year Dr. Spradlin and those in her office decided to add a bit more of a incentive to give by giving away a gift basket of goodies from area businesses. This year she had so many local businesses donate items they are giving away two gift baskets. There are two ways to enter, you can either drop off easy to prepare meals at Dr. Spradlin’s office or give a cash donation. After you give either a cash donation or a food donation your name will be put on a list, then two names will be drawn to receive the gift baskets. They will announce the winners on December 11th, so you have until then to donate food items or money. The gift baskets will include items from Simply Blessed, Bella Marie Boutique, the Tin Roof, Feather Your Nest, LuLaRoe, Cathy’s Confections, Stringbeans, Newsom’s, and more!
