Joni Phelps, EFNAP Agent at the UK Extension Office, was in studio Wednesday morning for WPKY’s weekly Extension Program.

Joni first reminded listeners of the upcoming Laugh & Learn Preschool Playdate on Friday, July 13th from 9:30 to 11AM at the UK Extension Office. Those who attend will participate in exciting activities that will engage children while building kindergarten readiness skills such as math, science, language, and fine and gross motor skills. The event is designed for children ages 5 and under and all children must be accompanied by an adult. There will also be a healthy snack, so when you call to register, let them know of any food allergies your child may have. The event is free but you must register by Thursday, July 12th, and can do so by calling the Extension Office at 270-365-2787.

Joni then told listeners about the next Recipe Review, which be held on Tuesday, July 17th, from 11:30AM to 12:30PM at the Extension Office. This month’s recipes are fruit pizza and Summer Veggie and Wild Rice Bake. Participants will get a chance to taste test each recipe and leave feedback, as well as pick up recipe cards. The taste testing event is come and go, free, and open to the public, but please register by Monday, July 16th, to let them know how much to prepare.

Also on Tuesday, July 17th, will be another “Cooking with Kids” workshop beginning at 5PM. Participants will learn how to prepare (and then eat) a full meal with the help of the whole family. There is no age limit and the workshop is free and open to the public. If you are interested, please call the Extension Office at 270-365-2787 to register by Monday, July 16th.

Joni also stated that she will be doing another “Cooking with Joni” workshop on Thursday, July 19th, at 11AM at the Extension Office. Participants will learn how to cook quick and easy meals as well as technical cooking skills, safety in the kitchen, and how to incorporate nutrition into your everyday meals. The workshop is free and open to the public but please register by calling the Extension Office by Wednesday, July 18th.

Joni then shifted gears and took a moment to talk about the “Feeding God’s Children” Backpack Program that gives children in a need easy-to-prepare meals to take home with them on weekends during the school year. The program will be kicking off for the eighth straight year in August and Joni stated that they are in need of monetary donations. It takes $120 to feed a child per school year. That $120 provides the child with a bag of 12 to 17 items every Friday, as well as extra items for spring and fall breaks, Christmas break, and extended weekends. The children receive the food items in non-identifiable bags to keep it as confidential as possible. Children who are participating in the program are only known if they so chose to reveal it, the school, HOPE and COPE Centers, and the Extension Office keep their identity under-wraps. The program, which also receives food from Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland, requires a permission slip be signed by a parent before the child is added to the program. If anyone is interested in giving a monetary donation, or donating any of the needed food items, contact Joni at the Extension Office at 270-365-2787.

For more information or to register for any of the upcoming workshops at the Extension Office call them at 270-365-2787.
