Rhonda Jewell, Caldwell County 4-H Agent at the UK Extension Office, was in studio Wednesday morning for WPKY’s weekly Extension Program.

Rhonda first told listeners of the upcoming 4-H Communication Contest, scheduled for April 14th, at the Extension Office. The contest will begin at 9AM and promotes communication by allowing students the opportunity to prepare speeches or presentations on a subject of their choosing. Speeches for those under 14 are 3 to 5 minutes, while speeches for those 14 and older are 5 to 7 minutes long. Students will compete only against their own age groups. Rhonda then mentioned that the Teen Leadership Academy graduation will be held at the Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville on April 19th and all those graduating will give presentations and speeches to their peers, guests, and school officials.

Rhonda then said that any Horse Club member interested in attending Horse Camp or the District Horse Show must attend a meeting on April 16th at 5PM at the Extension Office to begin the paperwork process. For more information you can call the office at 270-365-2787.

Rhonda also told listeners about the upcoming Teen Retreat on April 20th through the 22nd at the 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs. The retreat is for students in 8th through 12th grades and is a fun weekend that includes workshops, events, and fellowship. The retreat will include students from all over Western Kentucky. Rhonda also said that the Teen Council will be combining Earth Day and National Day of Service activities on April 28th to do clean ups around the county. They will be working with the county’s Solid Waste Management Department to help clean up county roads. Rhonda then reminded listeners that 4-H Camp is coming up on June 5th through the 8th in Dawson Springs. Cost this year is $200 with a $50 deposit to hold a spot, but Rhonda expressed that there are scholarships available for those who wish to go but can’t afford it, or for those who have multiple children interested in going. Rhonda also mentioned that Cloverbud Camp will be June 1st through the 3rd for children ages 5 to 8 and a parent or guardian, at the 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs. Cost is $120 per person and the camp is a way to introduce children and parents to 4-H Camp in a fun bonding weekend full of workshops, events, and fellowship.
