Shane Bogle, Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources at the UK Extension Office, was in studio Wednesday morning for WPKY’s weekly Extension Program.

Shane started off by thanking the mystery person or persons who were kind enough to plow and shovel the Extension Office’s parking lot and sidewalks. He then went on to remind listeners of the upcoming Private Applicator Pesticide Training that will take place on Tuesday, January 23rd at 8AM and 1PM at the UK Extension Office located on Highway 62 West in Princeton. Shane also told listeners of some changes coming to the Private Applicator Training. The pesticide, Dicamba, which is a selective herbicide similar to 2,4-D, has caused some issues in crops over the last year, so the EPA has now added dicamba to the restricted use pesticide list. The chemical is prone to drifting and can easily injure crops that aren’t resistant to it, especially soybeans and tobacco. In 2017 35,000 acres of soybeans and 62 acres of tobacco showed signs of dicamba injury. The chemical now requires an extra two hours of Private Applicator Training and some training classes around our area include Christian County on February 11th from 9 to 11AM, the Grand Rivers Senior Community Center on February 20th from 9 to 11AM, and at the Ballard Convention Center on February 9th from 1 to 3PM. Those who want to attend must have their photo ID and their Private Applicator Number. You can call the Extension Office at 270-365-2787 for more information about dicamba and the Private Applicator Trainings.

Shane then told listeners about the upcoming 4-H Horse Club for ages 9 to 18. The club will meet monthly at the Extension Office and participants can learn about horsemanship, breeds, care, health, etc., as well as participate in educational contests and competitions. Owning a horse is not a requirement. Enrollment forms are available at the Extension Office and at school offices and need to be returned to the Extension Office by Friday, January 26th. The first meeting will be on Monday, January 29th from 6 to 8PM at the Extension Office. The meeting will be a parent/youth informational meeting and parents are required to attend. For more information you can call the Extension Office at 270-365-2787.

Shane also reminded listeners that Weight Loss Wars begins Thursday, January 18th, at 5:30PM at the Extension Office. He also mentioned that several classes and workshops were being planned for adult horse owners and that he would have more information soon.
