Governor Andy Beshear made his first public comments Tuesday afternoon since Sunday’s Second Amendment rally at the state mansion that saw a group of people hang him in effigy.
Beshear said his two children, ages 9 and 10, were not at the mansion Sunday when the protestors were outside.
Beshear said his family is the first to live full-time in the governor’s mansion in over 30 years. He said he was worried about how it would impact his kids but never thought about or questioned their personal safety.
The governor said he expected some kids at school to heckle or bully his kids at schools but never expected that behavior from adults.
He admonished the group who hung an effigy of him and celebrated the assassination of a past president.
Beshear said the actions of the protestors were aimed at creating fear and terror. He said they are trying to bully everyone else into doing what they want them to do. He also called out elected officials that were in attendance at a May 2 rally at the capitol in Frankfort. He adds those officials must claim responsibility.
The governor said he will not back down or be bullied.
The governor also provided an update in cases Tuesday afternoon, where 387 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed across the state Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 8,951. He adds 3,115 people have recovered.
Three new deaths were also reported Tuesday from that same time period.
