A Dawson Springs man died of a self-inflicted gunshot during a traffic stop in Paducah Monday in which police determined he was in a stolen vehicle.
Paducah Police said 27-year-old Jacob Cox was pronounced dead at the scene by McCracken County Coroner Amanda Melton.
Shortly after five Monday, police received a report of a vehicle that had been stolen from the parking lot of a Park Avenue business. An off-duty Paducah police officer observed the vehicle a short time later. When other officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the vehicle slowed and rolled forward before coming to a stop against the curb.
When police approached the vehicle, they saw that Cox had shot himself.
Detectives later learned that Cox had fled a substance treatment center in McCracken County and assaulted an employee before stealing the truck. The truck’s owner told police he kept a handgun in his vehicle and police believe that’s the weapon Cox used.
Police said Cox had an active indictment warrant from Caldwell County for receiving stolen property.
