The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is reporting that KY 91 is blocked near the 5-mile marker at the northwest edge of Marion in Crittenden County where a temporary diversion for construction of a new bridge over Crooked Creek has washed out due to flash flooding.
District 1 spokesman Keith Todd says the temporary diversion had been in service since late last year to allow a contractor to start prep work for construction of a new bridge. He says the heavy rain Thursday, the heavy water flow in Crooked Creek undercut the fill the diversion at the site of a temporary bridge.
According to Todd, this section of KY 91 connects Marion to the Cave-in-Rock Ferry. Approximately 850 vehicles travel this section of KY 91 North of Marion on an average day.
Todd says this closure will require traffic to and from the ferry to detour via KY 135 West to KY 1668/Crittenden Springs Road to connect with U.S. 60 West of Marion.
He says there is no estimated duration for this closure.
Todd adds an engineering team is on-site checking the extent of damage to the diversion and temporary bridge. He says any attempt to complete repairs will likely have to wait until floodwaters drop at the site.
Construction of the new Crooked Creek Bridge is expected to be completed by May 1, 2022.
