Firefighters say they battled suspicious fires at two abandoned mobile homes in Crittenden County Thursday afternoon.
The Crittenden County Volunteer Fire Department reported on social media that firefighters responded to an unknown fire with heavy black smoke showing in the vicinity of Chapel Hill Road and Nipper Road around 3:40 p.m. They said a unit with the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and confirmed a structure fire in an abandoned doublewide trailer at 640 Nipper Road. At that time, firefighters said the response was upgraded to a working structure fire with Crittenden County EMS, Marion Fire and Fredonia Fire and Rescue also being dispatched to the scene.
According to firefighters, county fire units arrived on the scene and began fire suppression as the fire was beginning to spread to vegetation around the structure. They indicate when EMS arrived on the scene they continued down the single lane dead-end road to turn around and notified firefighters of a second structure fire in an abandoned single-wide trailer at 831 Nipper Road. Marion and Fredonia firefighters were sent to that location upon their arrival.
Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately three hours before returning to their stations.
Crittenden County volunteer firefighters are asking anyone with any information about these “suspicious fires” to contact the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office.
