After reaching a high of just over 7,000 residents in 1980, the population of Princeton continues to fall based on recent estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The numbers showed Princeton with 6,204 residents on July 1, 2021, which is down 66 residents from the 2020 Census total.
In 2010, Princeton had 6,329 residents. The city reached a high of 7,073 citizens, according to the 1980 census.
The population estimates from last July showed one of every five residents 65 and older with 28 percent 18 and under.
The numbers also show Princeton as more diverse than the county with 83 percent of its citizens white, compared to 13 percent Black and 3.5-percent Hispanic. Caldwell County is 92 percent white, and six-percent Black.
62 percent of Princeton’s residents own their home at a value of $75,600 compared to the state average of 67 percent ownership with an average home value of $147,000.
The average rent in Princeton is less than both the state and national average, according to the Census. Princeton’s average rent is $648 a month compared to Kentucky’s $783 and the national average of $1,096.
The numbers show 89 percent of Princeton’s homes with at least one computer and 85 percent with a high school diploma — both at or near the state average.
Princetonians drive an average of 25 minutes to work each day, which is two minutes longer than the state average.
The median household income of Princeton residents is $45,047 which is $3,200 less than the county average and $7,000 less than the state average.
Interestingly, Princeton does a good job of shopping at home with total retail sales per capita at $26,910 compared to the U.S. average of $15,224 and the state average of $14,430.
