Even now after so many victories, Ronny and Beth Drennan think it’s a blessing.
During Thursday’s 2022 Kentucky State Fair schedule, the owner/operators of Broadbent B&B Foods in Kuttawa once again claimed “grand champion” status for their delicious country hams.
That’s the 14th championship for the Drennans, and 21st overall in the company’s history.
Speaking with News Edge Director Alan Watts, Ronny said a last-second decision wound up being the ultimate winner.
Drennan noted that this ham came in north of 15 pounds.
Aside from “grand champion,” Drennan said Broadbent hams also claimed five other classes Thursday, making the 2022 Kentucky State Fair a landmark, memorable experience.
For more than a century, Broadbent’s has maintained a foundation of excellence while improving the process. According to officials, their hams are aged “longer than almost anyone else” — potentially 6-to-12 months.
The typical desire is to seek hickory-smoked flavor, using a slow cure of honey, salt and sugar, drawing up bacon flavors in hickory-smoked, hickory-smoked pepper, maplewood smoked and applewood smoked. And sausages, too.

The Drennans said the next step for the “grand champion” ham is the state fair’s Kentucky Farm Bureau Country Ham Breakfast and Charity Auction, where it should fetch a fine price.
