Third District State Senator Whitney Westerfield has been appointed to serve as co-chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Executive Committee, one of eight national committees dealing with both state and state-federal issues. The jurisdictions of the standing committees are comparable to committees within the state legislatures.
Tim Storey, the Chief Executive Officer of the committee, said in a release the NCSL has benefited from Senator Westerfield’s expertise for over nine years. He added that Westerfield’s participation will continue to ensure that the states’ agenda is carried out in Washington and effectively works to enhance the role of states and state legislatures in the federal system.
NCSL standing committees are comprised of legislators and legislative staff who are appointed by the leadership of their respective legislatures. The committees explore issues facing the states and develop policy on state-federal issues to guide NCSL’s advocacy efforts in Washington D.C. Officials indicate committees do not recommend policy to the legislatures on issues that are internal to the states.
Senator Westerfield said he believes in the NCSL’s mission and he is humbled and excited to come on board as co-chair overseeing the work of the standing committees. He noted that the work they do today will have a long-lasting impact on our nation and its citizens. Westerfield added that he hopes he can make thoughtful contributions to the policies they set and he’s grateful to accept the appointment.
NCSL is nationally recognized as a formidable advocate representing states’ interests before Congress, the White House, and federal agencies.
Westerfield, of Crofton, represents the 3rd District which includes the counties of Caldwell, Christian and Muhlenberg.
