NWS Issues Winter Storm Warning, Wind Chill Warning

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 2:00 Thursday afternoon through midnight along with a Wind Chill Warning in effect from 6:00 Thursday evening to noon Friday.
Meteorologists say heavy snow is expected with snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches across the area with isolated higher amounts of snow possible if heavier snow bands develop.
Winds will be gusting as high as 40 mph with dangerously cold wind chills expected as low as 30 below zero. The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
During a weather conference late Wednesday afternoon, Lead Forecaster Chris Noles at the Paducah weather office, said winds will stay consistent 15 to 30 mph and gust as high as 40 mph Thursday which will create dangerous wind chills and have prompted western Kentucky’s first wind chill warning in eight years.

Ahead of Thursday’s arctic front, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency for the state.
In addition to the cold weather and dangerous wind chills, other major concerns include the possibility of waterlines breaking, power outages occurring, and general damage to impact public infrastructure and private property.
Beshear noted his administration has been in contact with numerous county officials to ensure warming centers are open for residents in need. Kentucky State Parks will also serve as backup warming centers if other options aren’t available.
