Hazardous road conditions and power outages across Caldwell and Lyon counties were reported overnight and this morning as a dangerous winter storm with wind chills around 30 below zero pushed across western Kentucky.
Princeton Public Works Director David Sullenger is reporting slick conditions in the city this morning. He says roads remain covered this morning as the temperatures continue to be below zero.
Caldwell County Sheriff Chris Noel says secondary roads are treacherous due to drifting snow. He is asking residents to remain at home if possible.
Magistrate Jeff Simms is reporting in District 4 outside of a few drifts the roads are in pretty good shape for emergencies. He indicates this snow is like plowing flour and is perfect for heavy plowing to not damage roadways, but noted salt and brine at this temperature are useless. He says the roads are slick in places but, the much bigger danger is the cold. He recommends enjoying a safe day at home. However, if you do venture out, he says to drive very slowly.
Meanwhile, Lyon County Sheriff Brent White reported this morning that state police and local first responders were working an accident just after 6 a.m., westbound on Interstate 24 at the 48-mile marker. Throughout the evening Thursday, he says the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office worked a number of slide-offs and minor incidents but thankfully most people heeded the warning and stayed off the roadways.
According to Sheriff White, drifting and blowing snow continues to be a problem across the county. He asks residents to stay off the roadways if travel is not absolutely necessary in order to allow highway crews to work. He indicates that very cold temperatures remain the most dangerous part of this winter storm event.
The winter storm also caused some power outages across the region. Pennyrile Electric reported a power outage in Lyon County overnight affecting approximately 2,000 customers in the southern portion of the county. As of this morning, power has been restored to all of the customers affected.
As of 8:30 Friday morning, Pennyrile Electric is reporting 34 customers in Caldwell County are without power north of Interstate 69 off of Highway 293.
