Caldwell Fiscal Court Receives Update on Storm Sirens

In regular business conducted by the Caldwell County Fiscal Court at its final meeting of 2022, they heard an update about the state’s opioid settlement. The County has received $66,000 of the $330,000 that will be sent in payments through the year 2038. This money will have restrictions on where it may be spent.
The fiscal court also approved the bid on remounting the chassis on one of the ambulances. Remounting the body on a new chassis will save the County funds on this unit and on future replacements. The bid was for $116,900 instead of the $160,000 required to purchase a completely new ambulance.
The Court approved the monthly financial report, the treasurer’s transfers, the payment of bills, and the training hours for Sheriff Noel.
In other reports, Joey McCaslin reported that weather sirens had been ordered and would arrive turn key ready to be placed. 70 percent of the funds for the new sirens have been received and the paperwork for the other 30 percent is being processed.
Road Supervisor David Waldrum reported that the County needs to order more salt after the recent winter weather. The cost for the salt will be $200,000 for 200 tons of salt.
Incoming County Clerk Jennifer Hale requested two loans from the Fiscal Court to enable her to begin the new year. One loan is for $500 for cash on hand to be used for change for those who chose to pay by cash in the clerk’s office.
The other loan would be for $15,000 to start the year for payment of salaries for employees and supplies. She said the number of fees taken in during January may not cover these expenses and the loan would enable her to make payroll. The plan is for her to repay the loans in February. The Court approved both loans.
Watson told the Court that new e-poll books for elections would be required after the start of the new year. The books will be purchased by the State and the County would be required to pay a monthly service contract for each book. There are three companies in the State approved to provide this service and the incoming clerk employees would need to attend training sessions to learn about their operation.
