Westbound Work Zone on I-24 Cumberland River Bridge

Motorists need to be aware of a westbound work zone lane restriction on the Interstate 24 Cumberland River Bridge on Wednesday and Thursday.

District 1 spokesman Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says westbound traffic on I-24 near the 34-mile marker will be slowed and merged into one lane for an Under Bridge Inspection Vehicle (UBIV) and climbers to conduct a detailed inspection of the I-24 Cumberland River Bridge. The work zone will be in place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time each day. Todd says delays are possible during the movement and placement of equipment, and appropriate caution is required as flaggers and inspection personnel will be in close proximity to traffic.
According to Todd, the I-24 Cumberland River Bridge, which also carries I-69, is a twin continuous plate girder structure that is 1,731 feet long with a 420-foot main span. It is located at the Lyon-Livingston County Line and carries almost 30,000 vehicles across the Cumberland River in an average day.
Todd notes all Kentucky bridges get a detailed inspection every two years, with long-span lake and river bridges getting an extra walk-through inspection annually.
