The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced that the Cave-in-Rock Ferry has resumed operation after being temporarily closed most of the day due to high winds Saturday.
The ferry resumed operation around 4:00 p.m., according to District 1 spokesman Keith Todd.
A Wind Advisory was in effect until 1:00 Saturday afternoon with winds out of the west-northwest from 15 to 25 mph and gusts of from 40 to 45 mph for all of western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southeast Missouri.
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry connects KY 91 with Illinois Route 1 across the Ohio River between Crittenden County and Hardin County, Illinois, and operates 7 days a week with normal service starting at 6:00 a.m. until about 10:00 p.m. Todd says when the ferry is forced to close it turns a normal 10-mile trip between Cave-in-Rock, Illinois and Marion in Crittenden County into a 70-minute detour.
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry carries about 500 vehicles across the Ohio River on an average day.
