Residents gathered around the Fredonia Valley Veterans Memorial Park Monday afternoon to remember and honor those who gave their lives to serve our country and protect our freedom.
Pam Faughn of the Fredonia Historic Society welcomed those in attendance and introduced the program.
The newly formed American Legion Post 103 Color Guard replaced the flags representing the individual units of the military and then placed a new American Flag to be flown over the park.
The National Anthem was sung by the Fredonia Valley Voices as the crowd stood in respect for the newly placed flag. Rudy Fowler then led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
American Flags were presented to the ten families who are honored at the site for their sacrifices to our country. A short biography was given about each military member and then Presley Lamm and Rudy Fowler presented a representative of the soldier with a flag.
The Air Evac helicopter flown by a veteran flew over the grounds in recognition of those being remembered on Memorial Day.
Margie and Van Yandell both long-time local educators who now reside in Florida were in town and attended the ceremony. Margie stated we should always remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and their families.
Bobby Gilkey served in the Army and was grateful for the program.
Billy Baker lives in Fredonia and is proud that the city has such a nice memorial park.
The ceremony closed with the playing of Taps and prayer led by Presley Lamm.
