Wednesday was a successful day for a local group that strives to provide food for students during the months when school is out for summer break.
WPKY sets aside a day each year to focus on the efforts and needs of King’s Kitchen, operating under the leadership of Lee Anne Gilkey. Gilkey started the ministry several years ago and it continues to grow with the help of the community.
The day started out with a live remote from the Food Giant where shoppers could purchase items and present them directly to Gilkey and other volunteers. The remote moved to the radio station on West Main Street from Noon to 5:00 PM.
When the donations were counted, over $4,500 was raised, as well as numerous donations of food dropped off at both locations.
Gilkey shared that the program delivers boxes of food every two weeks during the summer and includes a variety of items.
The next distribution day will be Tuesday afternoon, June 13, at Southside Baptist Church’s Life Center.
According to Gilkey, there are over 250 students that receive boxes and no food is wasted.
The organization is in need of additional assistance during each distribution event.
If you missed donating Wednesday, there are ways you can contribute to King’s Kitchen year-round.
There were many individuals and groups that stopped by the food drive leaving donations and others who wanted more information about how to assist with the program.
The Princeton Kiwanis Club was one of the groups that stopped by and made a donation. Kiwanis Treasurer Bob Hayes said they were happy to support such a good cause.
King’s Kitchen will be providing boxes of food throughout June and July to help Caldwell County youth in need of food while school is out for the summer.
