PDHD Raises Awareness For National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and the Pennyrile District Health Department is taking the opportunity to raise awareness about this important issue.
Health Educator Jaycey Clark said they have observed a significant increase in suicides among older teens and young adults.

Clark added that suicides are more common among males than females.

It’s crucial to be aware of these statistics in order to identify potential issues and save lives. If you come across someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts, Clark advised having an open conversation with them.

It’s important not to diminish their feelings if they open up to you about their struggles.

To provide immediate help, the Suicide Prevention Hotline has been activated and can be reached by dialing 988. This resource can offer support and assistance to those in need.

When dealing with mental health issues locally, the Pennyroyal Center in Hopkinsville is the closest resource available. They can provide valuable assistance and support for individuals facing mental health challenges.

There are several warning signs that may indicate someone is contemplating suicide. These signs include withdrawing from family, friends, and the community, mood swings, increased drug or alcohol usage, and impulsive or reckless behavior.
