A Georgia man has been extradited to Lyon County in connection to the theft of a vehicle last fall.
Lyon County Sheriff Brent White says 49-year old Michael Coates, of Valdosta, was extradited shortly before 10:00 Sunday morning. Once he was back in Kentucky, Coates was charged with a Lyon District Court felony arrest warrant for theft by unlawful taking – automobile over $1,000 and under $10,000.
Coates is accused of stealing a 2010 Ford passenger car at a Kuttawa business off Exit 40 on or about September 13, 2023, and taking ti to Chicago on September 18, 2023, where it was reportedly involved in a police pursuit with the Chicago Police Department and later a collision. According to Sheriff White, the vehicle was totaled in the crash. He says Coates evaded police and fled to Georgia where he was tacked down with assistance of the Valdosta Police Department and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Caotes waived extradition back to Kentucky on January 19. He was lodged in the Crittenden County Jail.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the vehicle theft.
