In April of last year, the City of Princeton received a matching grant of $250,000 for the projects from the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
In the mayor’s report, Mayor Thomas also informed the city council that Caldwell County Extension Agent Shane Bogle has devised a plan to address the issue of land erosion in a specific area of Cedar Hill Cemetery to stabilize it.
In a letter addressed to the mayor, Bogle highlighted several challenging factors that contribute to the difficulty of addressing the issues in the cemetery area. These factors include shade, poor soil quality, inadequate nutrient levels, and a sloping terrain.
Bogle suggested the City needs a high quality of topsoil to cover the area as the soil tests showed a low pH and low nutrient levels. He further suggested utilizing the soil test results to determine the appropriate quantities of lime and fertilizer, which should be applied to the topsoil during both the upcoming spring and fall seasons.
Additionally, Bogle proposed that the City should consider using shade-tolerant fine fescue in the affected area. To address the slope, he recommended covering it with straw or erosion fabric, creating a temporary berm.
During the brief meeting, councilman Jim Joiner provided an update from the Princeton Electric Plant Board about the performance of its Prairie State campus.
