Caldwell County Awarded Grant for Purchase of Generators to Enhance Preparedness

Caldwell County has been awarded a grant to purchase several generators, which will improve its readiness for any major power outages in the future.

Emergency Management Director Joey McCaslin initiated the process to secure a mitigation grant for the generators in the summer of 2022. He announced Tuesday morning at the Caldwell County Fiscal Court meeting that the county has successfully been awarded the grant for five generators, which will be strategically placed at various locations within the county.

Judge Young mentioned that the total grant funding amount for the generators is $472,578, with a 5.2% match to be divided between the county and the City of Princeton.

click to download audioYoung commended McCaslin for his diligent efforts in securing the grant. McCaslin acknowledged the support of several others who also contributed to the process.

During the meeting, McCaslin also informed magistrates that the weather sirens in the county will not be tested on Wednesday, February 28, as they are typically tested on the last Wednesday of each month. However, he mentioned that the weather sirens will be activated next Wednesday as part of the statewide Tornado Drill.

click to download audioIn other new business, magistrates unanimously voted to approve an 80/20 Bridge Fund Grant Agreement totaling $42,030 for the replacement of two failing culverts, one located on Creswell Road and the other on Scottsburg Road.

Additionally, the magistrates granted authorization for Judge Young to approve any change orders related to annex repairs.

click to download audioIn other action, the Fiscal Court unanimously approved the recommendation of Animal Control Officer Kevin Lane to hire Chase Mitchell as a kennel technician for an upcoming position at the Caldwell County Animal Shelter. As of Tuesday morning, Jess Smith from the shelter reported that they currently have 35 dogs in their care, a decrease from 38 as three dogs were returned to their homes on Monday.
