The Caldwell County Water District estimates one in nearly four water meters they have are underperforming for accurate billing.

Water Superintendent Cody Kirby said the district will be replacing about 500 water meters over the next three months due to failed or poor performing water meters. Kirby said the water district has 2,212 water meters in the ground serving nearly 6,000 customers in Caldwell County.

He said this month, the district has 42% of the water district meters that are underperforming. The failed or poor performing meters that stand out in billing reports will be replaced first. Kirby said some customers may see an increase on their water bill soon, but that will be due to poor performing meters at their residence.

Kirby said with assistance from the Caldwell County Judge’s office as well as the Pennyrile Area Development District, the water district is currently seeking funds to replace every water meter in the districts water service area.

Kirby estimates the project will cost around $1 million and that nearly $200,000 of grant funding has already been applied for.

When the improvements are completed, the water district will be able to notify its customers of customer leaks within 24 hours, receive water leakage push notifications via their mobile device, and have accurate and fair billing throughout the county service area.

Kirby said the project is set to begin around October 1.
