Caldwell County Youth Shine at West Area 4-H Forestry Field Day

At the West Area 4-H Forestry Field Day held at Land Between the Lakes, Caldwell County’s young participants secured top honors in various forestry skills.

Caldwell County 4-H Agent Rhonda Jewell announced that 45 youths, aged 9-17, participated in the event, including nine from Caldwell. She noted that the 4-H’ers learned tree identification, compass use, pacing, and measuring trees with a Biltmore stick to determine wood production, followed by a quiz on their newfound knowledge.

According to Jewell, the following Caldwell 4-H’ers were in the top 3:

Juniors:

Xavier Flowers -1st Place in Tree ID

Sadie Howard – 2nd Place in Tree Measurement

Senior:

Dominik Giovanelli – 2nd Place in compass and pacing, 2nd Place in Tree Measurement, 1st Place in Tree ID, and 2nd Place in Overall Senior

Jewell mentioned that the youth also had the chance to visit the Nature Station.

She expressed her gratitude to Laurie Thomas from the U.S. Department of Forestry, Ashley Osborne, the Kentucky 4-H State Specialist, and everyone else who contributed to organizing the event.
