William “Billy” Edward Travis, a beloved husband, father, and dedicated dairy farmer, passed away on October 30, 2024, at 78 years old.
Billy was born on January 19, 1946, in Princeton, KY to the late Leonard and Hazel Hart Travis. Billy attended Murray State University, where he majored in Agriculture, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in the dairy industry. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971, a commitment that shaped his values of service and dedication.
From 1984 until his retirement in 2013, Billy was an influential figure in the dairy community, serving on several boards including the American Dairy Association of Kentucky, Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA), and the United Dairy Industry Association (UDIA). He held various positions throughout his tenure, including president of SUDIA, and was recognized for his contributions to the industry with the prestigious Richard E. Lyng Award for distinguished service in dairy promotion and research. This was presented to him by the National Dairy Board in 2013.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Billy was known for his zest for life. We often joked that he had nine lives. He had a knack for getting himself into trouble, but proved time and again that nothing could keep him down for too long. He loved water skiing, playing cards and shuffleboard, dancing, bird hunting, and spending quality time with friends and family. His adventurous spirit and infectious laughter brought joy to everyone around him.
Billy is survived by his loving wife, Susan Travis; his sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Bubby Gray; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mashae DePue, Meghan and Christian Talley, Mallory and Kelly Nowels; and five cherished grandchildren, Will DePue, Annalise and Oliver Talley, and Leonard and Hugh Nowels.
