Mattie Marie Robinson McGowan, 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at her home in Princeton, Kentucky.
Mattie was born in Kuttawa on June 17, 1952, to her late parents, Cable and Jessie Mae Robinson. Mattie dedicated her life to service and caring for others. She embraced her roles as a social worker at Western State Hospital with unwavering dedication, retiring only after many years of impacting countless lives. Mattie extended her nurturing spirit into her personal life as well, not only by raising her own children but also by opening her home and heart as a foster parent. Beyond her vocation, Mattie was also deeply involved in her religion, displaying her faith and devotion as an attendee of the Kingdom Hall.
She also proved herself a multifaceted professional, demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit and skillful communication as a health insurance agent. Mattie’s pursuit of knowledge led her to earn an Associate in Applied Science from Hopkinsville Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree of Science from Midcontinent University, a Certificate to Instruct for Prime Life, and a notary for the state.
Mattie’s love for the arts was reflected in her hobbies – from her skillful decorating in her home to her sewing; every piece she created was a testament to her one-of-a-kind spirit. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures: gardening, dancing, enjoying the fellowship of family at a barbecue, or reveling in the tranquility of being outdoors. Those who knew her best will remember her as loving, intelligent, and creative.
She is survived by her loving husband of five years, Melvin Fredrick Blanton; her daughter, De’Shawna McGowan of Louisville, KY; her son, Jamar McGowan of Princeton; one step-daughter, Kelly Edwards of Clarksville, TN; three step-sons, William, Rodney, & Jay Blanton, of Madisonville; one sister, Thelma Robinson Sivils of Hopkinsville; her two brothers, Clarence Robinson of Princeton, Jackie Robinson of Atlanta, GA; grandson, Josiah Waller, alongside a host of other step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her sisters, Jo Ann Faulkner, Myrtle McKinney, Dorothy Sivels, and Betty Jean Robinson; and her brothers, Howard Wesley Robinson, James Robinson, Raymond Lewis Robinson, Lonnie Robinson and Elliott Robinson; and nephew, Shawn D. Maxie.
