During Monday night’s meeting, the Princeton City Council was briefed on a text amendment recommendation from the Planning Commission regarding a medical cannabis ordinance, as the city prepares to establish guidelines following its legalization in Kentucky.
Medical cannabis was legalized in Kentucky on January 1st, and Jenny Clark from the Planning Commission stated that they aim to be prepared by establishing the city’s guidelines.
She explained that the Planning Commission sought to establish guidelines for medical cannabis in anticipation of a potential relocation of a licensed business from Lyon County to Princeton.
Clark mentioned that she has already been in discussions with one of the medical cannabis businesses about the possibility of moving to Princeton.
The City Council is not obligated to take any action on this matter; they simply need to be informed of the Planning Commission’s decision during a Council meeting.
In other business, the City Council approved a resolution permitting the City to apply to the state ABC Commission for additional package store licenses in Princeton. As Deputy Clerk Alan Getz explained during a previous council meeting, Princeton is currently limited to two package stores. However, recent changes in state law could allow the city to increase this quota if the new state guidelines are met. The resolution marks the first step in seeking state approval, and if granted, the City could receive up to two additional package store allotments.
