The National Weather Service in Paducah has announced opportunities for students enrolled in both high school and college to learn more not only about working in their office, but also the career opportunities in atmospheric science.
Now through March 21, they are accepting summer student volunteer applications, where those studying atmospheric science, meteorology, climatology, hydrology, or any other weather-related field who have completed their freshman year can apply.
These volunteers will shadow forecasters and staff at the office, go on outreach visits to core partners, and work on a research project that will be presented to the staff at the end of the semester.
One must be available to commit at least eight hours per week to volunteering, and some of the summer research project could possibly be virtually completed.
Email a resume with a legal name, preferred name or nickname, an email address, a mailing address, a phone number, university attendance with major and anticipated graduation date, and contact information for an academic advisor to derrick.snyder@noaa.gov. Any list for work, volunteer and leadership experience inside and outside of school is preferred, as is any academic, professional or personal references.
A copy of the most recent college transcript, as well as a 1-to-2 page statement of interests introducing one’s self and career aspirations, is also necessary.
All content should be sent as separate PDF Files to derrick.snyder@noaa.gov with a subject line of “Summer Student Volunteer Application.”
Finalists will be notified in early April, with interviews following. Selections will be made in late April, and the volunteer period runs from early June through early August.
Meanwhile, shadowing is also another acceptable pathway for students to learn this summer, and this can be high school or college students willing to work for a day — learning the skills and courses necessary for employment at the Nation Weather Service.
These students will need to have transportation to the office, and typically shifts are three-to-six hours long, between 10 AM and 4 PM weekdays. Parents, teachers and guardians are allowed to remain on site during this networking.
Snyder can be contacted about this opportunity, as well.
