Western Kentucky’s battle with deep snow and below freezing temperatures is not a lonely one.

During a Wednesday morning “Team Kentucky” update from Frankfort, Governor Andy Beshear noted Kentucky State Police has received more than 12,500 calls for service in the last 24 hours.

One of which came from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s District 1 operations on I-24.

Beshear said KSP statewide responded to at least 50 injury and non-injury accidents, 39 motorist assists — but thankfully, no fatal accidents.

While emergency management and state officials work to clear A and B routes around the Commonwealth, citizens will certainly work to clear their driveways and sidewalks.

One thing to avoid shoveling snow? Overexertion. Beshear said one should take precautions.

Furthermore, Beshear is one of many to mention over the last 36 hours for drivers to refrain from going around barriers and road closed signs.

Not only are flood waters still high in many parts of the state, but now some of those waters are frozen over, hypothermic, and even more dangerous than they were this past weekend.

Thursday and Friday will present arctic temperatures and below-zero wind chills for most of Kentucky, meaning icy travel conditions can be expected both mornings.

As for flooding updates, Beshear confirmed 14 have died following last Friday and Saturday’s storms, and currently 215 reside in Eastern Kentucky state parks as waters slowly recede.

Beshear said a $20,000 donation from CSX has come to help cover funerals, and $20,000 more is needed, while most power outages have been reduced to minimal levels — just in time for much needed heat.
