Caldwell Fiscal Court Receives Update on Trees Removed at Courthouse

If you’ve recently been in downtown Princeton, you may have noticed the changed landscape on the east side of the Caldwell County Courthouse, where two Magnolia trees were removed over the weekend.

As previously reported, District 4 Magistrate Jeff Simms explained during the February 11 Fiscal Court meeting that significant rot was discovered in the two trees during trimming for the courthouse roof repair project.

click to download audioAt that meeting, he also mentioned that they consulted Jarvis Tree Service, a certified state arborist, who assessed the condition of the two Magnolia trees and recommended their removal due to safety concerns.

click to download audioAt Tuesday morning’s Fiscal Court meeting, Simms provided an update on the removal of the two trees, noting that they were in worse condition than initially believed and outlining the next steps.

click to download audioHe noted that while everyone on the Fiscal Court and the committee regretted the loss of the Magnolia trees, he appreciated the grace and understanding shown by those in the community who were kind and passionate about the issue.

Additionally, Simms stated that they are actively exploring solutions, and once they receive the soil samples, it will determine the type of grass that can thrive there temporarily until the full plan is implemented.
