A Trigg County Sheriff’s deputy was shot following a police pursuit that began in Lyon County on Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Aaron Acree said a deputy was shot, and “sheriff’s office personnel” returned fire.

Acree said the deputy was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, where he was listed in stable condition. He added they are not releasing his name due to notifying family members and privacy.

He also said they have requested that the Kentucky State Police investigate the shooting and that his department is cooperating fully with Kentucky State Police while they conduct their investigation.

Your News Edge’s John Godsey reported from the scene that the incident began on I-24 in Lyon County.

Information received from state police Tuesday afternoon said troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the 42-mile marker of I-24 in Lyon County around 11:50 am when the vehicle accelerated. The pursuit continued into Trigg County where Trigg deputies became involved.

State police said the suspect’s vehicle was involved in a one-car crash near the Cadiz exit of I-24 and US 68. The suspect left the vehicle in the pasture field behind the Red Roof Inn and ran away while shooting at law enforcement, striking one deputy. The incident came to an end after the suspect crossed the old Cadiz Railroad bed on foot where he was shot by law enforcement officials. State Police confirmed that three Trigg County Sheriff’s deputies fired their weapons, striking the suspect. Following the shooting, multiple law enforcement officers combed the area searching for any other threats. The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Jermaine Terrell Jackson Jr., of Florissant, Missouri. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Trigg County Coroners Office.

After the Broadbent Square area was determined to be safe, Godsey says the investigation into the officer-involved shooting got underway by Kentucky State Police.

The Cadiz Police Department along with the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office, Hopkinsville Police Department, Christian County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police were on the scene along with an ambulance.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team, which investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the state, will be handling the investigation, with no other details expected to be released until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered.
