Princeton City Council Briefed on Downtown Building Roof Collapse

At last week’s meeting, Princeton Code Enforcement Officer Alan Getz provided an update to city council on the recent roof collapse of a downtown building.

Getz shared that an aerial inspection conducted on February 27 of the Trail of Tears Big Springs Walkway discovered the roof collapse at 134 East Main Street, which prompted a property inspection on February 28 that declared the building unsafe.

click to download audioHe stated that the building’s condition was reviewed on March 3, and the engineering company’s report, containing their observations, was submitted on March 23.

click to download audioGetz indicated that the property owner was first notified on March 13 and again on March 25, triggering a 24-hour deadline for the owner to address the nuisance to protect the community’s safety, health, and well-being. However, he clarified that if the owner fails to take action, the city will be responsible.

click to download audioGetz mentioned that he has reached out to asbestos inspectors and officials in other cities to learn how they manage similar issues.
