The Caldwell County FFA Alumni and Friends held their regular meeting Tuesday at the high school with around 40 in attendance.
The meeting started off with an open house of the Agriculture Department with FFA students giving guided tours of the facilities they will be using this year. This gave parents and guests the opportunity to meet Agriculture teacher Parker Jennings.
The tour gave guests a first-hand look at the agriculture shop, classroom and culinary room which will join the greenhouse in classroom studies. The culinary room is something that may not regularly be associated with FFA and the Agriculture Department but FFA Reporter Emma Peake explained that it will house the Food Science class offered to students. This class will instruct the students to examine the elements of food, then prepare the food, and eventually consume the finished product. This class will also help prepare students for State Competition in poultry and meat judging, milk quality and food science.
The meeting was called to order by Alumni vice president Dana Hobby. FFA Advisor Magen Woods explained to those attending for the first time that the Alumni and Friends was a support group for the Agriculture Department and assisted them in various projects during the year. It is open to any Alumni of the FFA or anyone who wanted to support the students. She gave a report on recent FFA programs and listed upcoming activities including the Kentucky State Fair and the Farm to Plate Event. Students will be traveling to Louisville to the fair on August 17 thru 19 attending a Louisville Bats baseball game and touring the Louisville Zoo on Wednesday before competing in the State Fair on Thursday and Friday. The Farm to Plate Event takes elementary students to tour local farms during the last week of September. She then explained a major fundraising event for the upcoming year.
Former FFA Advisor and Ag Teacher Gerry Baker is now a member of the Alumni and explained the sausage fundraiser.
