Tammy Hancock will be one of the Grand Marshals for the Black Patch Parade representing WPKY.
Hancock grew up on her family farm in Christian County where she enjoyed helping her Dad with chores like milking the cows, cutting tobacco and baling hay. She credits her parents and grandparents with being major influences on her work ethic today.
Hancock graduated from Christian County where she played tennis and basketball and was in the band. She was one of the first 8th graders allowed to join the high school band where she played saxophone. Her involvement in the band allowed her to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and also play at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta while showcasing her saxophone talents.
Hancock’s first job was working in the office of a major factory in Hopkinsville. When visiting friends in Houston she decided to relocate there and went to work for a mortgage company. She later moved to Florida to continue to work in mortgages where they funded and traded mortgages which required her to make regular flights to the HUD office in Washington DC. She eventually moved back to Kentucky.
Hancock returned to the family farm and rejoined her parents and 3 brothers where she currently lives with her 2 Great Pyrenees dogs. She has a 10-year-old male and a 6-year-old rescued female that are usually used to guard livestock but are content with living as house pets.
Hancock’s career in broadcasting began in 1990 at TV 43 in Hopkinsville after long-time friend Beth Mann mentioned they were looking for help. Hancock left there and went to work for D.J. Everett, III who had purchased a radio station. She worked there for a few years and over the years has worked for other news outlets but returned to WKDZ where she has been the majority of her career. She wasn’t really planning on working in the news but things changed for her.
