Slightly higher temperatures and improved power system conditions have allowed the Tennessee Valley Authority to end the intermittent interruptions held Friday and Saturday across the region.
Don Moul, TVA’s chief operating officer said the 153 local power companies that were part of the outages allowed the power grid to remain stable during a historic energy demand.
On Saturday morning, TVA directed local power companies to implement planned, short-duration, intermittent power interruptions to maintain system reliably. This action is similar to steps that TVA and local power companies took on Friday to help ensure power system reliability.
During the 24 hours of Friday and Saturday, TVA supplied more energy than at any other time in its history – 740 gigawatt-hours, or 740 million kilowatt-hours. The cold also produced a winter record for peak power demand of 33,425 megawatts Friday night when the region-wide average temperature was 9 degrees.
The outages caused Saturday’s Tennessee Titans’ start time against Houston in Nashville to be delayed by an hour.
