FEMA has approved more than $5 million in federal funding for Hopkins County for debris removal from the December 10-11, 2021 tornadoes.
According to FEMA, the debris removal was conducted from December 27 to January 25, 2022, and involved the removal of 180,521 cubic yards of construction and demolition debris and 53,411 cubic yards of vegetative debris from roads and rights of way throughout Hopkins County.
The debris removal was fully funded by FEMA with a 100% federal cost share.
The funding is given to the Commonwealth and after review, will be provided to sub-recipients on a reimbursable basis.
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell issued a statement Wednesday afternoon that he was happy to hear Hopkins County is benefiting from FEMA’s assistance program and will receive $5 million to help recover from the 2021 tornadoes. He added that this federal funding will take an enormous financial burden off the county, allowing them to keep their attention and budgets on rebuilding. He also stated that “we are a long way from fully repairing the damage left by the storm, but this is an important step in the right direction.”
The FEMA Public Assistance program provides grants to state, tribal and local governments, and private nonprofit organizations.
