Fatal Crashes in Caldwell Down From Unusual 2021 High


After an unusual spike in 2021 that saw seven people killed in Caldwell County motor vehicle crashes, that number was reduced significantly in 2022 according to numbers released by the state transportation cabinet.
There were two fatal traffic crashes reported in Caldwell County last year — one near Fredonia in January and one near the entrance to Caldwell County High School in March.
There were seven people killed in crashes in Caldwell County in 2021 — the most in recent years. There were only two fatalities reported in a three-year period from 2018-20.
Statewide, traffic fatalities in Kentucky decreased in 2022 for the first time since 2018.
There were 744 fatalities in Kentucky in 2022, down from 806 in 2021. Of the 744 fatalities last year, state police said 57% were not wearing a seat belt. In terms of what caused those crashes, fifteen of the fatalities involved alcohol, and about one-third involved speeding or aggressive drivers. 20% involved driver distraction, according to the state transportation cabinet.
