Several organizations have come together to provide something extra this holiday season to Western Kentucky families affected by the December 2021 tornado.
The Kentucky Dream Center in partnership with Virginia-based disaster relief group Mercy Chefs, Kentucky Pork Producers Association, The National Pork Board, Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Specialty Foods Group of Owensboro, Dawson Springs Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRYSC), Dawson Springs Rotary Club, and Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders will give away grocery boxes this Saturday at Dawson Springs High School, to all households affected by the tornado disaster.
Mercy Chefs is a global non-profit disaster response group that specializes in feeding people affected by disasters. According to Joel Cauley, director of Church Partnerships with Mercy Chefs, they most recently spent several months serving hundreds of meals and offering support in western Kentucky following the December 2021 tornado.
Cauley said the grocery box will contain some “delicious” pork.

click to download audioAccording to Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles, the simple gesture of a box of groceries during the holiday season to those affected by any natural disaster can bring about the spark of hope that we all need when we are going through a loss. He noted that it was the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s immense pleasure to partner with these fine organizations to make this event happen.
On Saturday, December 16th, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., the Kentucky Dream Center and their partners will organize a drive-thru distribution of the grocery boxes and fresh pork products at Dawson Springs High School, located at 317 Eli Street. Officials strongly encourage everyone in the community to attend and benefit from this initiative.
