As our Year in Review continues, WPKY’s News Edge takes a look back at some of the top stories in Caldwell and Lyon counties in 2023.
The community had its ups and downs this year, mourning the loss of a former Caldwell County student and the co-founder of a local dealership, while two local businesses celebrated being featured in a national video and a worldwide ad campaign.
The community mourned the death of 14-year old Ja’Quaden Glover of Paducah, who was killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash on Old Madisonville Road that also injured three other local teens just days before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Princeton Police reported that when officers responded to the scene of the wreck they found a vehicle on fire and overturned in the road. Police said 15-year old Colson Mattocks and 17-year old Lucas Rowlands, both of Princeton, and 14-year old Camarion Hall of Fredonia were able to crawl out of the vehicle and taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries. Glover was pronounced dead at the scene by the Caldwell County Coroner.
Glover previously attended Caldwell County Public Schools, where he was a student-athlete at the middle school before transferring. He is the son of Dawnesha Wilson and JaQuan Glover.
The community also mourned the loss of Ada Lou Hughes, the co-founder of Trice Hughes Chevrolet in Princeton. who passed away in November at the age of 94.
Hughes and her husband, Trice Lee Hughes initially opened the Trice Hughes Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Kuttawa and relocated the dealership to Princeton in 1959. Mrs. Hughes managed the office and remained actively involved in the business until she eventually reduced her involvement to spending more time with her four children as they were growing up.
Mrs. Hughes was also an active member of First Baptist Church in Princeton for 60 years and served on the advisory board and later the board of trustees of the Kentucky Baptist Children’s Homes for more than two decades. She was also involved with the Caldwell County High School music and football programs and prepared food for Meals on Wheels.
There was also some good news as two local businesses were recognized on a national level.
The Joint BBQ, Wings & More in Eddyville was selected to be featured as one of America’s Best Restaurants bringing attention to local, independently owned restaurants.
Allison Choate, the owner of The Joint BBQ, Wings & More in Eddyville, told Your News Edge in November that her restaurant was contacted by America’s Best Restaurants last year, but unfortunately, the circumstances were not favorable at that time.

click to download audioMeanwhile, Coleman Shoes, Repair & Bootery in Princeton was chosen by Red Wing Boots, a globally recognized brand, to be showcased in an upcoming worldwide advertisement.
In an interview with WPKY’s News Edge in November, Allison Herndon, the manager of Coleman Shoes, provided insights into the rich history of the store, which is currently owned and operated by her parents, Ronnie and Dana Coleman. Established in the early 1900s, the store has served the community for over a century.
She said that Coleman Shoes had sold Red Wing Boots for numerous years and was chosen for a photo shoot in Princeton for a global advertisement featuring the Red Wing Boots Heritage Series.
