After receiving notification last month from the West Kentucky Correctional Complex that they would no longer process recyclables, Lyon County Judge-Executive Jaime Smith has unveiled a temporary plan to address the recycling issue in the county.
After the West Kentucky Regional Recycling meeting last week, Lyon County Judge-Executive Jaime Smith revealed that a long-term solution for recycling is still being explored and could not be finalized. However, in the interim, Smith announced that the county will resume accepting cardboard and paper only as a short-term solution.
Smith says they hope to reopen the recycling area by Monday, February 26, for the collection of cardboard and paper for the time being.
For several years, the West Kentucky Correctional Complex has been providing recycling services to Caldwell, Crittenden, Livingston, Lyon, and Trigg counties. However, at the end of January, county officials received notification from the prison farm stating they would be permanently discontinuing their recycling program due to safety and other concerns.
