Caldwell Sheriff Addresses Rotary Club, Reflects on Productive First Year in Office

The Princeton Rotary Club welcomed Sheriff Don Weedman as the guest speaker at its Tuesday meeting last week.

Sheriff Weedman, who has 40-plus years of law enforcement, shared information about his first 16 months after being elected, which he said has been successful.

Sheriff Weedman expressed gratitude to the Rotarians for inviting him to speak and proceeded to outline the responsibilities of a sheriff, highlighting tax collection as one of the key duties of his office, among other tasks including providing security in court. He noted that he is in the process of working with the Administrative Office of the Courts to further secure the courthouse.

He mentioned that the sheriff’s office oversees over 300 square miles in the county, which includes more than 550 miles of county and state roads.

click to download audioAccording to Sheriff Weedman, his office will have six deputies by the end of the year.

click to download audioHe also shared that deputies covered over 103,000 miles in the county in 2023 and shared additional statistics from the previous year.

click to download audioSheriff Weedman mentioned that he is striving to save and be as frugal as possible with their budget, which is almost $1.3 million, with approximately $400,000 of that dedicated funds, which leaves roughly $850,000 to cover salaries and other things of that nature, as well as vehicles.

Additionally, the sheriff’s office is currently working on launching a new website after facing restrictions on Facebook because they posted something that offended someone.

One thing, he stated, that is more important than anything else is the treatment of people.
