At a public hearing held Thursday night at the Caldwell County courthouse, approximately 20 property owners gathered to express their concerns over the proposed discontinuance of 21 roads from the county’s road system.
Before opening up the floor to hear comments, Judge-Executive Kota Young provided some background information regarding the roads that were proposed by the Road Committee and the criteria initially used.
He then announced the changes to the initial road discontinuance list, noting that Booker Lake Road will not be entirely removed; instead, only the back 1.67 miles will be discontinued, preserving the front 845 feet.
He also mentioned three additional changes to the original proposal.
Young also outlined adjustments to two roads on the proposed removal list.
After Young and magistrates addressed property owners’ concerns for about 90 minutes, a special Fiscal Court session was held where magistrates unanimously approved the amended road adjustments and appointed Rick Blackburn, former Judge-Executive Larry Curling, and County Road Supervisor David Waldrum as viewers. They will inspect the proposed roads for discontinuance and report on potential inconveniences at a Fiscal Court hearing on Tuesday morning.
After the meeting, Young told Your News Edge that it was crucial to allow those affected by the road discontinuances to ask questions and voice their concerns.
