Caldwell Special Olympics Team Advances to State After Surprise Announcement (w/PHOTOS)

The Caldwell County Special Olympics Basketball Teams both recently competed in a regional competition in Bowling Green.

Members of the Gold Team, the Blue Team, and the Cheerleaders spent two days competing against other teams in the First Region.

Coach Roy Gene Rogers shared that this year had the most teams enter the regional contest.

click to download audioRogers explained when they arrived at the tournament they were informed that only the first-place team in the divisions would be advancing to the state contest.

click to download audioRogers added that with the silver medals, they would not advance to state this year. He said there was some disappointment but the athletes accepted it and were ready to move on to track and maybe get some rest before practice began. Then on Monday morning, they got a surprise and things changed.

click to download audioRogers noted when he and Vickie Purcell started with Special Olympics 11 years ago they had 7 players involved and it has grown each year and they now have 24. He said with the growth in numbers the expenses had also grown and they always welcome support for the group.

click to download audioThe next few weeks will be a busy time for the Special Olympics as they continue to prepare for the state tournament and also begin practicing for the track season.
